The Announcement

We've been agonizing over how best to tell our immediate family.  Close friends know about our impending move already.  It's family that's quite hard to break the news to.  I guess it's because the expectation is that you'll always be around - a phone call away, a short drive away, and a few days or weeks before meeting.  But we're now moving to the other side of the world, 12 hours time difference, 27 hours travel time.

Approach
We plan to tell everyone once either one of us signs on the letter of offer. Together with breaking the news, we'll tell our parents (i) how we'll be keeping in touch - video calls on Skype; and (ii) how we'll be continuing to give them monthly allowances. We think these are the two main concerns they might have.
Occasion
At this moment, there are two options that we're playing with in our mind (i) gathering at home; (ii) over lunch or dinner at a restaurant. The latter, being a public place, might help them to control their reactions a little and help restrain or limit panic. However, the former is a more comfortable and safe environment and might lessen the surprise. We don't know yet.

There's still a bit of time to go before we have to come to a decision.  Some things are best left to simmer for a while before they become clearer.  We'll see.
